Side effects?<\/p>\n<p><strong>NSAIDS are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.\u00a0<\/strong>The 3 types of medication in this class are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>Aspirin<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><em>Non-selective<\/em> cox inhibitors, e.g. Motrin (Ibuprophen). (The &#8220;cox&#8221;\u00a0relates to an enzyme in our bodies involved in inflammation.)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div><em>Selective<\/em> cox-2 inhibitors, e.g. Celebrex<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/40\/79842725_401d4a1faf.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"161\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Effect of NSAIDS:<\/strong> NSAIDS block inflammation from occurring, and thus stop the pain that&#8217;s caused by inflammation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uses of NSAIDS:<\/strong> Because NSAIDS block inflammation, they&#8217;re helpful in disorders that have inflammation, such as arthritis and some types of back pain. They don&#8217;t help in pain disorders that don&#8217;t have inflammation, such as fibromyalgia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Potential Side Effects:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bleeding<\/li>\n<li>Stomach upset<\/li>\n<li>Asthma (in 10% of people)<\/li>\n<li>Kidney problems<\/li>\n<li>Cox-2 medications increase clotting, which can cause heart attacks and stroke. This is why some of these medications have been taken off the market.<\/li>\n<li>Liver toxicity above recommended doses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While these medications can be helpful, don&#8217;t eat them like candy. They&#8217;re not benign! Many people don&#8217;t recognize this, as they&#8217;re sold over the counter, and\u00a0so are assumed to be perfectly safe. Some stronger dosages have even been discontinued because of the risk of patients taking too much medication.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interesting fact:<\/strong> In studies, there is no difference in effectiveness between 1 medication in a class and another.
