Our previous article on Wednesday featured a reader Aimee’s story about her experience with abdominal adhesive disease. Adhesions are scar-like connective tissues that form between tissues, and are common after surgery. It is thought that adhesions sometimes lead to chronic pain.
2 websites that provide more information about adhesions:
Products which may help to prevent adhesions have been developed, and work on better products continues. From a research perspective, it isn’t clear if they are routinely effective. One website that discusses a preventive product is Seprafilm.
Have any readers had problems with adhesions causing pain? Let us know in the comments.

Hello, My name is Susan. I have had abdominal and pelvic pain for 12 years. During the last 10 years I have seen 13 Doctors. It became obvious to me in 2008 after all the “guess” diagnosis that I was dealing with adhesions. I will not bore anyone with ALL the tests and the negative results. My last Dr. said it was time to go in and have a look. I had done my research. I knew about proper surgical practices. I knew about Seprafilm. My Dr. passed “my test”. We scheduled surgery for 12-29-09. He had planned for laprascoptic but within a couple of minutes he exited and performed a Laparoptomy. He used Seprafilm on me. I was 40% adhered. 5-29-09 will be my five month mark. I realized three weeks ago I was swelling again. I ignored this. It could NOT be happening again. 12 days ago I started have the same pre-op pain, low grade fever, 6-7″ of swelling daily. I go back to see him on 5-27. I can not imagine giving up but that 15 day stay in the hospital and the pain from the surgery is doing a real number on my emotions. I look forward to talking to anyone that has been through this.

I have only had adhesions for 7 months from my first operation in august 08. In 16 days (17-06-09) im having a laproscopic adhesiolysis. Does anyone know if you have to ask the doc to use some type of prevention or will he automatically do it?
thanks x

How to Cope with Pain // Jun 1, 2009 at 10:09 pm
Vicky, I’d suggest talking with the surgeon about the pros and cons of this option. There are mixed results from the products. Some surgeons use something, while some don’t. It’s important to realize that these types of products do not automatically and 100% prevent adhesions.

I have suffered from adhesions for well over 10 years. I had pelvic pain that began right before I had to have a complete hysterectomy due to abnormal cells found during an exploratory surgery intended to find the source of the lower abdominal pain. I was 51 at the time and well on my way towards the “Change of Life”. Since then I have had the worst abdominal and lower back pain (similar to labor and back labor). The pain will sometimes just go away on its own for no apparent reason. There have been times when I was without pain for several months. But the norm is several months with chronic pain both pelvic and lower back. It is often so overwhelming that it interferes with my daily life (especially that with my family and friends). I hurt so much I only want to hid away in bed all day. I have been seen by a pain management team who gave me shots in my spin. I endured this for about 6 months until which time the procedure had no effects any more. I am currently on Oxycodine, anti-depressants and sleep aids prescribed by my primary doctor. The medication often takes the edge off of the pain but far too often I have had no relief. I am concerned about all of the narcotics I am taking and what it might be doing to my liver.
