Enjoy What You Can Do

This is Chet’s response to an article here about having a positive attitude and de-stressing.  I like including thoughts, suggestions and wisdom from my readers as it helps us all learn together.  Thanks, Chet!

This (de-stressing) is easier said than done, but I’ve found over the past 42 years  – where I’ve had 5 spinal surgeries, thyroid cancer, prostate cancer, and been diagnosed with Charcot Marie Tooth – that this works.

Do not stress and fret about what you can’t do anymore that you used to enjoy.  Instead, focus on getting satisfaction from what you can do in your current condition and then push to do more.  However, keep your pushes to baby steps so that a failure does not set you back.  Over time you may find that you’re doing much more than you thought you could.  As far as the things you can’t do anymore that you enjoyed – keep the good memories and banish the regrets.

    What a terrific email, Chet. Thanks for sharing this excellent bit of advice, certainly worth a lot more than two cents! It is certainly most challenging to redirect focus and concentration on what I can still do versus sadness and pain over what i have lost. I find that it takes great willpower and determination to resist the undertow of getting depressed over the many precious Pleasures chronic pain has removed from my life. I need to be continually reminded to not Indulge my sadness and instead to be as creative and flexible as I can to develop joys within My current capacity Thanks for your sharing. Marty
