A reader, Tracy, asked about computer use and pain. In this series of 3 articles, we’ll look at this issue.
Last week we looked at how computer use can cause pain, through poor posture and repetitive movements. Today we’ll look at what good posture is for computer use.
I wrote about this topic recently at Working with Chronic Illness, including a diagram of good posture and tips on how to sit to be comfortable. Check out the post.
This Friday, we’ll look at simple exercises you can do while you type to prevent pain and injury. Other articles in this series:
Grand Rounds, this week’s best medical-blog writing is hosted by Dr. Wes, a (ba-bum…….ba-bum………ba-bum) cardiologist.

I work at the computer all day long and sometimes long into the night. I have arthritis, ehlers-danlos, and fibro. I am an online professor and teach approximate 8 online classes every semester from my home. I found this neat laptop table about a year ago and it has literally saved my shoulders (AC joint and rotator cuff tear) and my back (degenerative disk disease) and hips, wrists, and so forth. Two weeks ago I fractured a rib from a nasty bout with bronchitis and I’ve literally been working and sleeping in my recliner for nearly two weeks. This laptop desk make it possible to continue my work even when I can’t sit in a regular chair or lie down in a bed. I highly recommend this air desk — it can even be used beside a bed.
